Abstract

Fathi Hassan Malkawi’s article attempts to link educational research, including its methodologies and applications, to Islamic studies in universities. It explains the concept of “research” and its importance, and the concept of “research methodology” from an Islamic perspective, and then addresses the requirements of university teaching and associated elements such as scientific specialization, Sharʿiah knowledge, professionalism, and methodology. It then discusses the state of Islamic education at universities in the East and West. The article concludes with three assumptions: that there is room for educational development in departments that offer Islamic studies; that research on Islamic studies at the university level will reflect positively on teachers' performance outcomes; and that research on Islamic studies at the university level will generate a discourse that will help improve teaching practices.
