Abstract
Abdul-Rahman Hillali’s article examines the methodological approach to understanding the Qur’an. It attempts to capture the historical context which led the field of Qur'anic studies to study Qur'anic concepts and terminologies within what is known as thematic exegesis (al-tafsīr al-mawdūʿī). It highlights the importance of language and contemporary linguistic studies in methodological approaches to understanding Qur'anic concepts and terminologies. It also aims to define the meaning of “concept” and “terminology” from a linguistic and philosophical perspective, and to reveal the differences between them in an attempt to discover the meanings of the Qur'an and its prospects from within its text, away from projecting tenuous meanings from beyond the text which misrepresent it; a matter which was and still is an obstacle that obstructs a holistic understanding of the Qur'an.
