Abstract
Azmi al-Sayyed’s article attempts to clarify a number of aspects pertaining to the intellectual renewal project in the fields of history, theology, philosophy, and Sufism, through the following themes: Ibn Khaldūn’s thought and project, renewal in the science of history (the need and aspects), reform of research methodology, ta’ṣīl (a framework established upon referral to principal Islamic sources) and taqʿīd (formation of rules), reform and renewal in theology (preference to later scholars, critical analysis of the causes of dispute, the importance of reason, understanding tawḥīd (Oneness of God)), reform and renewal in philosophy, and reform and renewal in Sufism. The article concludes that Ibn Khaldūn’s renewal project is systematic, comprehensive, and coherent.
