Abstract

Salah Ismail’s study confronts the issue of concepts and its importance in intellectual life, and discusses means of studying concepts from varied angles and multi-disciplinary approaches, including the linguistic, psychological, and philosophical perspectives.  His research focuses on the philosophical and epistemological approaches to concepts, and explains the importance of concepts as an epistemological necessity. He analyzes the structure of concepts using Descartes’ understanding of them. He examines concepts and the problem of meaning using Ibn Jinnī’s and al-Jurjānī’s understanding of meanings, concepts of religion, morals, and human sciences in general. And he establishes a set of rules governing the proper handling of concepts, including recognition of civilizational exclusivity to the concept, knowledge of the terminological meaning of the concept, knowledge of the semantic developmental process (development of meaning), and knowledge of the original and historic meaning of the concept.
