Abstract

Muhammad Rafiʿ’s study contributes to the ta’ṣīl (a framework established upon referral to principal Islamic sources) of the issue of disagreement with the other (i.e., one with a different frame of reference) and its taqʿīd (rules) according to the principles of Islamic tradition. The discussion revolves around the following themes:  the foundational frames of reference in regulating disagreement with the other to the Qur’an and Sunnah, guidelines for regulating disagreement from an uṣūlī perspective, comprehensive guidelines, detailed guidelines (i.e., pertaining to inference, inquiries and responses, and evidence that comes with slander or censure). The conclusion emphasizes that the issue of disagreement with the other needs to be guided by an Islamic frame of reference with solid principles and rules.
