Abstract

Ahmad Abdul Salam’s article discusses the impact of the cultural background of the mufassir (exegete) in interpreting Qur’anic female references, contending that variations in cultural background leads to differences in interpreting these references. The article attempts to highlight these influences and their applications through a comparative analytical study of premodern and modern interpretations of Qur’anic female references. It examines the following topics: female Qur’anic references, influence of culture in interpreting Qur'anic verses, cultural influences in the tafsīr (Qur’anic exegesis) tradition, tafsīr methodologies, Qur'anic references pertaining to female-related matters (i.e., feminine personality, women’s rights, polygyny, alimony, dress, and inheritance). The article concludes with observations and suggestions.
