Abstract

Al-Bukhari and Muslim are among the early scholars who compiled the authentic Hadith, and wrote the two books of Sahih. Scholars were preoccupied in studying and dealing with these books. Among the questions in this regards is the way to give preference to hadith that is most likely authentic. Both scholars agree in principle to prefer the most likely in the case of contradiction. However the two scholars have not done this in some cases, some of what Al-Bukahri has preferred is considered by Muslim the otherwise. Both scholars have relied on a number of suppositions and evidence that commentators drew on them later to demonstrate the jurisprudence of both Sheikhs.

This paper explains why the two Sheikhs differed in preferring what they considered the most correct, and the inability of both or one of them to make this decision, so that they narrated two variant Hadiths without indicating which is the most likely or unlikely. However the two Sheikhs or one of them would indicate the most likely, and narrate the unlikely at the same time. The study shed some light on the approach of the two Sheikhs in preferring the most likely text, the relativity and contradictions of what is more likely evidence, and reasons or narrating some ahadith for interpretation or as certain academic issues in the science of hadith.
