Abstract

Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s article narrates the acquaintance and cooperation between him and Shaykh Muhammad al-Ghazali. He discusses the foundations of daʿwah (outreach or inviting to Islam) thought, characteristics and qualifications of the one who performs daʿwah (dāʿiyyah) in the thought of al-Ghazali, Qur’anic studies and al-Ghazali’s thematic exegesis, means of engaging with the Qur’an, the status of the Sunnah in relation to the Qur’an, the controversy that arose regarding al-Ghazali’s book Al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah bayn Ahl al-Fiqh wa Ahl al-Ḥadīth, principles of jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh), al-Ghazali's championing of women’s issues in the name of Islam, freedom and resistance of political despotism, causes of the Ummah’s retreat from the perspective of al-Ghazali, his attempt to purify tradition from fallacies and superstitions, and concluding with his attempts at rationalizing Islamic awakening.
