Abstract
Muhammad al-Dessouki renews the debate on the renewal of uṣūl al-fiqh in terms of being the disciplinary science for the process of ijtihad and the foundation for rules of inference and rules of engaging with the Islamic sacred texts. He argues for the need to review the methodologies and foundations of the science of uṣūl al-fiqh and eliminating the unnecessary and non-productive elements from it, stressing that transforming the discussions in the discipline of maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (objectives of Shariʿah) into a primary course is meant to open broader prospects for the practice of ijtihad. Al-Dessouki’s study discusses the inception and development of the science of uṣūl al-fiqh, the stage of codification (tadwīn), its schools of thought and methodologies, and the scopes of renewal.
