Abstract

Abdul Wahhab al-Meseri’s article presents a study to scholars and intellectuals regarding the relationship between Muslims and the other (the West) in its civilization and culture. He surveys the West's view on Muslims, their history, and civilization, by way of “Orientalism,” and calls for establishing a new science, “Occidentalism.” His study details the causes of disintegration of the Arab-Muslim mind and emphasizes the notion of “Western relativity” and the regression of Western centrality. He outlines the stages of accomplishing the project of critiquing Western thought as follows:

  • A critical study of Western thought, including the concepts of modernity, post-modernity, theories of development, green parties, and environmental activism.
  • A critical study of matters particular to Western civilization, including Max Weber’s theory, exclusivity of Western technological advancement, the crisis of knowledge in natural sciences, the religious and cultural foundations of Western concepts, and Jewish sources in Western thought.
