Abstract

Ammar al-Talbi highlights some prominent features that became evident in his interaction with Shaykh al-Ghazali during his time in Algeria (1984-89). He discusses al-Ghazali’s efforts in establishing Jamiʿat al-ʿUlum al-Islamiyyah (University of Islamic Sciences), al-Ghazali’s thematic interpretation of the Qur’an (with reference to the views of Ibn Bādīs, Ibn ʿĀshūr, and Darrāz), and his fight against callowness in daʿwah (Muslim outreach or inviting to Islam) and ill-understanding of some hadith without reference to the Qur’an, as illustrated in his book Al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah bayn Ahl al-Fiqh wa Ahl al-Ḥadīth. Al-Talbi also discusses al-Ghazali’s engagement with daʿwah, his position towards the paths of deviant politics, political despotism, freedom and democracy in the Muslim word, and his enlightened approach towards family and women’s issues.
