Abstract
Ayman Saleh’s article seeks to formulate a methodology for correct and productive comprehension of sacred text. He holds that achieving this must begin with the purpose God intended for the act of comprehension. The correct method of comprehending text is determined through the needed tools of comprehension, such as linguistic and Shariʿah rules. His article then examines the purpose that the Lawgiver outlines for the one attempting to comprehend the text, whether in written form or orally; a purpose that provides direction and prevents excess or negligence. He addresses this issue by discussing the comprehensive meaning of text, wherein meaning cannot be formulated except with the totality of intended meanings and unintended—yet essential—meanings. He further discusses the purpose of comprehending the message in general and the text in particular, and the different types of comprehension.
