Abstract
Abd al-Rahim al-Khulaifi’s article offers a biographical sketch of Muhammad ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Thaʿālabī (d. 1944), a Muslim revolutionary and reformer. His article addresses: the general Tunisian scene in the era of al-Thaʿālabī; al-Thaʿālabī’s life and career; his trial for publishing an article in Al-Manar journal; opponents' accusations against him; his imprisonment; and his book Rūḥ al-Taḥarur fī al-Qur’ān al-Karīm (The Spirit of Liberation in the Holy Qur'an) in which he addressed many issues such as women in Islam, Islamic sects, tolerance, and Sufi orders. His article also discusses al-Thaʿālabī’s exile, establishing the commando secret society in Tunisia, al-Thaʿālabī in Iraq, and the Muslim League in the thought of Shaykh al-Thaʿālabī. The article is a historical chronology highlighting notable episodes in al-Thaʿālabī’s life and calls for giving his writings and thought more attention.
