Abstract
Abdullah Kilani’s study examines Ibn Khaldūn's view of the functions of religion in social ʿumrān (human civilizational development), the extent to which this idea is in harmony with the relationship between state and the community, and the role played by Ibn Khaldūn in identifying the Sunnan Ilāhiyyah (Divine universal laws) in human ʿumrān, especially those laws which relate to the factors of strengths and weaknesses of any human society. The study addresses: human ʿumrān in Ibn Khaldūn's thought between the Qur'anic view and Greek philosophy, the position of the state vis-à-vis ʿumrān, the function of a religious system in the state in Ibn Khaldūn's thought, and Ibn Khaldūn's methodology in understanding sacred text related to the social subject. It concludes with a summary of Ibn Khaldūn’s scientific methodology.
