Abstract

Motaz al-Khatib’s article is a study of Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi as a witness to the transformations of contemporary Islamic thought, and his emergence as a religious reference by tracing the paths of his development and the components of his frame of reference. The article discusses Yusuf al-Qaradawi and frames of reference, frame of reference in the historical context, the inception and paths of configuring the frame of reference, components of the frame of reference (i.e., centrality of fiqh/Shariʿah, the frame of reference in context, frame of reference in discourse, and his encyclopedic acquisition and production of knowledge), and the prospects and boundaries of Qaradawi’s role. The conclusion contends that challenges will ensue post-Qaradawi because of the lack of a comparable and parallel personality.
