Abstract
Bushra al-Bustani’s article addresses Arab Islamic critical thought, which she holds is in need of pious Muslim critical thinkers in the areas of intellectual thought, literature, and the arts, in order to form a cultural institution that studies, researches, balances, and addresses literary and artistic productions through a serious practical criticism. The article addresses this issue in accordance with the following themes: critique in writing and intellectual discussion, the term “Islamic literature,” the field of criticism in the Arab scene and what it needs, literary genres and the spirit of the times, and perceptions of beauty. It concludes with a discussion of actual criticism which does not operate except inside the dynamics of the society it is in, and therefore, must be developed.
