Sharif al-Najjar’s article discusses grammatical parsing (syntax) and tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis) as two intertwined sciences, each of which aims to reach the correct meaning, and each lead to the other. It discusses the title given to the research and its importance, the purpose of researching it, and the methodology used. It analyzes examples from Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, and discusses the tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr (exegesis of the Qur’an derived from Islamic primary sources including the Qur’an and hadith) and al-Ṭabarī, tafsīr and grammar, and examples of tafsīr of Sūrah al-Baqarah in Jāmiʿ al-Bayān. It concludes with a discussion of the impact of tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr on the syntax of Qur'anic verses and the significance of looking at meaning in grammatical parsing.
