Abstract
Ali Arif’s article offers an Islamic perspective on advances in biology and genetic engineering, with particular focus on the question of cloning. He discusses genetic engineering and genes, Qur’anic verses on creation, and genetic engineering in agriculture, food (nutrition), the medical field, and medicine (pharmaceuticals), addressing harms that result and rulings from the Shariʿah. He further addresses embryonic cloning and shows the negative consequences of it, and discusses the changing of God’s creations, the elimination of rights, and the independence of the individual and the family. He questions the legitimate interests that may be achieved by cloning; and he calls on Muslim scholars to give attention to this issue and to formulate a vision and religious positions that are not mere reactionary but that intelligently consider the science surrounding the issue.
