Abstract
The maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (objectives of Shariʿah) stem from the five indispensable maqāṣid and culminate in them. If these maqāṣid are present, everything else is also present, and if they are neglected, everything else ceases. The five indispensable maqāṣid are the pivots that concern all temporal and eternal interests. Abdul Nur Baza’s article discusses the reason for a Shariʿah-based maqṣad (objective) to be indispensable. It tackles this through a brief treatment of the core essence of the indispensable maqāṣid and their proofs and standards, and by looking at a number of additional premodern and modern maqāṣid.
